Global Stainless Steel Output Rises Steadily in H1 2026, with Asia as the Core Growth Engine

    September 4, 2026

According to the latest authoritative data released by the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF), global crude stainless steel output reached 33 million tonnes in the first half of 2026, registering a solid 5% year‑on‑year increase. The figures show that amid multiple uncertainties hanging over the global macroeconomy, the worldwide stainless steel industry has maintained strong resilience and an expanding trend.

By regional breakdown, the Asian market continues to act as the core engine of global stainless steel production. In the first half of the year, Asia’s crude stainless steel output hit 28.3 million tonnes, up 6.1% year‑on‑year and outpacing all other regions globally. As the world’s largest stainless‑steel producer, China delivered an outstanding performance with output of 21.068 million tonnes in H1, surging 7.1% year‑on‑year and holding a dominant share of global total production.

By contrast, production in Europe and America showed divergent trends. The European Union produced 2.913 million tonnes of crude stainless steel in the first half, down 3.7% year‑on‑year, reflecting industrial contraction under dual pressure from rising costs and weak demand. The US market posted moderate growth, with H1 output at 1.147 million tonnes, a 3.2% year‑on‑year rise. Meanwhile, other economies including Brazil, Russia and South Africa recorded a combined output of 0.597 million tonnes, growing by 2.9% year‑on‑year.

Industry analysis suggests the overall rise in global stainless steel output during H1 2026 was mainly driven by sustained manufacturing recovery across Asia, especially in China, together with stronger demand for stainless steel from new‑energy sectors and high‑end equipment manufacturing. Nevertheless, rising global trade protectionism and escalating geopolitical tensions may create greater operating headwinds for the stainless steel industry in the second half of the year. Supply‑chain stability, volatile raw‑material prices and durability of downstream demand will emerge as critical factors shaping future market trends.

In summary, H1 2026 production data sets a positive tone for the global stainless steel market. Even so, the sector must stay alert to latent risks and adapt to upcoming market shifts through technological innovation and structural upgrading.
